Please note, both elementary and secondary levels utilize a balanced literacy approach to address phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. These literacy components are outlined in the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards in the Reading Standards (above). At the elementary level, direct instruction takes place during the Language Arts instructional block during small and whole group reading instruction. Formal (Fountas and Pinnell Assessment System) and informal assessments are used to determine mastery of literacy skills and guide instructional decisions for individual elementary students. At the secondary levels, formal (Phonics Inventory, Reading Inventory, Measures of Academic Progress, PARCC) and informal assessments are used to determine mastery of literacy skills and guide instructional decisions for each student.
Expectations for Language Arts learning is provided by grade level.
