This is a request under the Maryland Public Information Act, State Government § Article 10-611 to 618. The Banner is requesting Pursuant to MPIA, documents related to teacher absences for every school year between 2018-2019 and 2025-2026 with the exception of 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.
We are asking for data on the absences of classroom teachers, who are sometimes called “teachers of record.” We are not seeking absences for staff or literacy or math coaches or teacher assistants, but rather only the teachers who are in charge of classrooms.
We understand that teachers in many districts are given sick and personal days each year, but that they are not given vacation days outside of holidays. So we are looking for teacher absences during the school year when they use sick or personal days. We ask that you take out the absences associated with a family leave or serious illness that keep a teacher out for an extended period of time. In addition, we do not want absences for professional development days to be part of the data.
We would like anonymized data for the absences for each teacher by school and the grade band they are teaching (elementary, middle or high).
We ask that this be provided in a machine-readable format from which we can extract data, such as an excel file. We do not want a PDF.
