HCPSS MPIA Request #2018-279

Requested Information
Please provide AP course enrollment data by high school for the past 3 years.

For the upcoming year, please provide each projected AP course offering for each high school. Please include for each course: all sections in that high school, and each time period each course is offered. Also, please provide number of students in each high school that have requested to take each course, and indicate if it is first or subsequent choice. We wish to verify that equal opportunity of course offerings is provided across high schools.

Response Notes

For SY2018-2019 no master schedule, with projected courses, currently exists. Students have requested courses, but many things go into the planning of a final schedule, which is dependent on staffing, demand for courses, and the individual needs of a student (for instance while a course may be their first-choice AP class, they may also want to take something at ARL, HCC or other classes that have set schedules to work around). For reference, see the course catalog with AP courses offered for SY2018-2019: http://www.hcpss.org/f/academics/hs-catalog-2018-19.pdf

For reference, reports on AP enrollment and outcomes are reported annually to the Board and can be found online:

Responsive Documents
Data from existing reports on enrollment per AP course section, per school and year. Please note the data parameters contained in the attached chart. Under both the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), which restricts access to student records, and MPIA GP § 4-313, which prevents disclosure of school district records pertaining to individual students, HCPSS must protect against the potential disclosures of personally identifiable information about students. In accordance, HCPSS follows the Maryland State Department of Education and the National Center for Education Statistics’ guidelines for protecting student privacy in public reporting and suppresses the following from responsive records: counts that fall below 10; percentages that are less than or equal to 5, or greater than or equal to 95; categories directly related to specific student records; and/or information that, when combined with other publicly accessible data, can reasonably identify an individual student or reveals information from an individual student’s record. HCPSS has made substantial efforts to ensure the accuracy of this information; however, data collection and reporting is consistently subject to change. Please be mindful when comparing data as many variances can occur between reports based on date pulled, parameters used, categories included, etc.

*Some request language is summarized to include the requester's specific document requests and legally protected information (such as personally identifiable information of a student) or personal, defamatory and malicious content removed at the discretion of the school system.

**Responses containing legally protected information available only to the person of interest are omitted from the above report.
