Responsive to this request, please find below participants by location for a 2019 HCPSS training on restorative justice. This training was conducted December 2-5, 2019 and was conducted by Rita Alfred from the Restorative Justice Training Institute (Oakland, CA). Staff indicates the following descriptor was used at the time:
To address the need for professional development in restorative justice, the Howard County Public School System Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is offering a restorative justice circle training Monday, December 2 - Thursday, December 5, 2019. This training will take place from 8:30am-4:30pm each day at the North Laurel Community Center (9411 Whiskey Bottom Rd, Laurel, MD 20723). This experiential training will provide attendees with an understanding of the circle process and its potential for building relationships within the school community; promoting healthy communication; developing social emotional learning and youth competencies; and creating safe spaces to address difficult issues, trauma, and healing. Participants will learn the stages and flow of the circle and practice the fundamental elements of the peace circle process, including ritual, storytelling, establishing shared values, building trust, and consensus decision-making. This is not a training to keep repairing harm circles.
At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to keep peace circles; however, participants will not be able to train others. This is not a Training of Trainers.
Additionally, staff indicates no formal training was provided by HCPSS in 2020. For reference, the Howard County Education Association was the recipient of a grant to implement restorative practices among staff, and as such would be the custodian of records related to training details. Therefore, I would refer you to the Howard County Education Association, which can be reached at 410-997-3440 or online at http://hceanea.org/.
