This response included a chart (see DSE Interventions 2014-2018) of reading interventions used by HCPSS between 2014 and 2018.
This response included updated information on reading interventions along with focus areas (see Literacy Interventions FY19) as used by Curriculum staff. Please note, while not included in this chart, Wilson continues to be used from the previous chart and as included in the Pre-K-12 Language Arts Program Overview (below).
While the 2018 chart provided above did not contain the targeting reading skills by program, staff located the attached historical record of interventions including focus areas, which was last updated in 2016. Although no dates within the record indicated how long each program has been used, staff indicates this record had previously been used as a running account of reading interventions within the past 10 years.
Since the 2019 chart provided above, staff indicates the only new reading intervention added is SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) which has a targeted focus area in foundational skills Tier 2 or 3. For reference, a description of this program can be found on the program’s website.
The language arts program, as outlined in this 2019 report to the Board, is based on a comprehensive literacy approach aligned to the Maryland College and Career Ready standards which focus on direct instruction of phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, fluency, language and writing using a variety of authentic text (fiction and non-fiction). This document also contains information on reading intervention programs.
One reading program has recently been purchased - the Being a Reader program for K-2. An overview of that program as provided to teachers is attached for reference.
